The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture in partnership with the Albany Museum was celebrating International Museums Day at Albany Museum. Guided by the theme “Museum Collections Make Connections”. The commemoration and the collaboration of the International Museums Day (IMD) is an annual event that began in 1977. Since then 18 May of every year, museums all over the world create awareness about their function, vision and mission, take time to make with the public on a more personal level and also make a concerted effort to introduce their museum collections to communities. The core functions of the museum are to research, exhibit and educate.
The aims of the programme are to expose the learners, especially those from previously disadvantaged communities to museums its role and importance as a learning institution. Our focus this year is to take the schools from Ndlambe local municipality to visit the museum. The learners from the following schools, Kuyasa Primary, Nomzamo High, Velile High, Nompucuko Combined, Ukhanyo High and Ikamvalesizwe High attended the event. We took them to the following research departments Anthropology,Fresh water Invertebrates and Archaeology to see the museum collections.The learners wrote an essay about “Museums Collections Make Connections”. The first prize won by the learner that came from Velile High, the second prize of a digital camera won by the learner came from Nomzamo High and also the third prize won by a learner that came from Nomzamo High and it was a parker pen. It was an exciting competition.
The leaner from Velile High represented the Cacadu District in the Provincial International Museums Day it was held at Adelaide on the 27 May 2014. I would like to thank our new MEC of department of sport recreation arts and culture Mrs Penny Majodina and the Senior Manager, Museums and Heritage Mr Similo Grootboom for their wonderful speeches. And also I would like to spread my sincere gratitude to my guest speakers and the Albany Museum staff during IMD at Albany Museum. The event was organised by the education officer of Albany Museum Mrs Nozipho Madinda and Mr Zandisile Sakata of Cacadu District Museums and Heritage.
